This Week's Tip
How to Write Quickly: 7 Step 'List & Expand' Process
18 months ago, it used to take me over 1 hour to write a post.
My process was stressful. Wake up, think of something to write on the spot, post it. Awful. But now 18 months, 7,500+ posts and 1,000s of hours later…
I confidently sit down and write 200-300 words in 15-20 minutes.
Becoming a better digital writer comes with reps, time and practice. I’ve recently dialled in on my writing process.
And it’s resulted in feedback like this:
Here’s my 7 Step 'List & Expand' Process:
- I go into Shield Analytics. This is my database of all my content I’ve ever posted.
- I take a post from weeks, months ago. I’m looking for high views/high engagement rate.
- I use the topic and points made as my basis for a new post.
- I write a new hook first. I always do this, can’t write without a hook first.
- I write a list. Most of my posts are actionable, step by steps. So I list every main step or point.
- I expand on each point. Add context, bring the point to life, explain why it matters.
- I sign it off. I add a TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) after every post so skim readers can consume a lazy version.
That’s it.
After that I add the text into one of my three carousel templates and schedule.
(Carousels = visual PDF documents, they get typically 50% or more reach than text for me)
Try it out and see if it works for you.
The secret is to not overcomplicate it.
Get an idea, write a list, expand.
This Week's Story
How I Struggle with Comparing Myself (& How I'm Fighting It)
The biggest issue I struggle with in my business: comparison.
Someone made £500k off a cohort launch? I want to do cohorts.
Someone signed up 500 community members in 1 month? I want to launch a community.
And so on.
It’s annoying. It holds me back. It frustrates me at times.
When from the outside my business looks incredibly simple (and it is):
- I write content LinkedIn & Twitter X
- I sell digital writing templates
- I offer 1:1 consulting calls
- I offer ghostwriting for 7 figure CEOs
But when I see others doing something new or smashing it, I admittedly get FOMO/I compare. It’s dumb.
Here’s the thing though…
Everyone’s the same.
I’ve made friends with 100s of business owners and creators like me. And I hear it from them all the time, too.
They want the next big thing. And so do I.
It’s a battle, but my focus right now:
Don’t compare. Stay in my lane. Do what I do better than anyone else.
Because what works for me doesn’t work for someone else.
And vice versa.
This Week's Offer
How you can Join Me and Luke Matthews LIVE on 'Lessons from Racing to 100k'
In October 2022, I publicly challenged Luke Matthews to a Race to 100k Followers.
At the time, I was at 25,000 and Luke was at 68,000.
But on Thursday 3rd August 2023, that race ended. And I was victorious. I won, Luke lost.
Here’s the thing though...
It wasn’t as simple as 'just a race'.
Luke’s business is flying and my content has stepped up to levels I didn’t think I would get to.
It pushed us to find new ways to succeed. And we uncovered some gems along the way.
If you’d like to know these gems behind our Race to 100k Followers…
Join me and Luke for 1 hour on Wednesday 23rd August @ 4pm UK time.
We’ll be discussing everything we learned along the way:
- How Luke pivoted from storytelling content to educational content
- How I DOUBLED my monthly impressions
- How we both stopped caring about anything BUT the race (lol)
PLUS:
- Vote LIVE on a prize and punishment for us both
- Hang around and chat with us on a 30 minute Q&A
It’s gonna be fun, I hope you can join us.
48 hour Early Bird Access is live now - tickets are £10.
After 48 hours, they will go up to £25.
That's all for this week. I hope you enjoyed reading.
See you next Saturday.
Cheers,
Matt
