Loads of people like to take the piss out of this digital writing advice:
“Be consistent”
But all I hear when I hop on sales calls, DM prospects and when I speak to my Mum on the phone is:
- “I struggle with consistency”
- “I’d like to be more consistent”
- “Do the dishes”
Yeah alright mum. I’m 30 years old, I’ll do the dishes.
So if being consistent is such bad advice…how come everyone struggles?
It’s that lack of consistency that stops founders, CEOs and solopreneurs from:
- Generating a steady stream of 3-5 of the right leads every month
- Growing a targeted audience that trusts and engages with them
- Building brand recognition that will create referrals
There’s tons of opportunities to be had, just from being there every day.
Agency CEOs have paid me £5,000/mo to help them be there every day as their ghostwriter.
They’ve paid me £3,000/mo to work with them 1:1 to help them be consistent online.
The simple act of consistently putting out 1 piece of great content every day can transform your business. Relieve that stress off your shoulders. Give you comfort that your business will keep growing.
But what’s the secret to writing consistently online?
There isn’t one to be honest. And if it was a secret it’s a worst kept secret than Kim Kardashian’s sex tape.
Here are my 2 (not so) secrets to being consistent:
1. Scheduling content ahead of time
2. Batch writing content every week
Not so magical, eh?
Unfortunately, many people still can’t do it.
But it’s these 2 habits that have allowed me to post every week day without fail on LinkedIn since January 2022.
And help my clients generate $1m+ in revenue through LinkedIn attributed deals.
So, let me show you how I go about it. And how I execute it for my clients. Hopefully it gives you some inspiration to go do it yourself.
1. Schedule content ahead of time
Everyone is different but I hear these bullship excuses a lot:
- “I hear scheduling reduces reach”
- “I’ve heard using 3rd party tools reduces reach”
- “My mates dad’s brother’s sister’s ghostwriter got banned for 19 months because they scheduled a listicle post with a 3rd party tool and now they’re homeless”
Listen up: it’s nonsense.
99% of huge accounts you see on social media schedules their content.
Why?
Because they realise the trade off.
Yes, some of these myths about reducing your reach or getting bans might be true.
(By the way, there’s no proof they are true. The most concrete advice I’ve had is that if you act like a robot, the platform will ban you. So be a bloody human and you’re fine, K?)
The trade off is that being consistent and being prepared by scheduling your content has WAY bigger and more positive impact on your overall growth than any reduction in reach.
PLUS your:
- Lead generation
- Personal brand growth
- Follower acceleration
- Mental health (seriously)
- Burnout prevention
Than any 5% or 10% reduction in reach.
Here’s my very simple scheduling process (which I’ve been doing for 20 months now):
- I document a rough weekly content schedule
- I sit down and write a piece of content for each day (I’ll come on to this next)
- I open up a scheduling tool (my preference is Taplio)
- I add the posts into my queue
Then, I forget about it.
Because Taplio posts it for me.
I instantly relieve myself of all the stress, anxiety and potential to forget and fall out of routine.
Scheduling content ahead of time will transform your content - no doubt.
2. Batch write content every week
Loads of people hate this one too.
Here’s what I hear a lot of:
- “When I batch write, it takes the spontaneity out my content”
- “When I batch write, I struggle to be as creative”
- “I struggle to batch write consistently” (oh boy, the ultimate killer)
I’ve got a harsh truth for you:
Your content should be anything BUT spontaneous. Creativity is manufactured, it’s not a skill you are born with or without.
And if you can’t batch write consistently?
Well, you need to follow some of the personal development advice that is circulating online at breakneck speed. Some of it might help. Some (most likely all of it) will not help.
But back to batch writing content…
Everyone is different.
Batch writing might not work for everyone. But for me it will. So it has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
The trouble is: it’s SO effective.
- It saves you time sporadically writing
- It saves you stress writing on the spot
- It gives you hyper focus on your writing
I find when I batch write, to a prepared schedule or strategy, I’m able to dial in so much more on the kind of content I need to be putting out. And to the right person.
Otherwise I end up waffling on about trees and rocket emojis.
Rubbish.
Here’s how I batch write my content every week in 4 steps:
- I put a 1 hour 45 mins slot in my calendar every Monday
- I call that slot ‘Write 5 x text posts’
- Every Monday, I block out everything and write content
- I schedule it in with Taplio
Now, sometimes I execute very well. Sometimes I execute very badly.
But the important thing is I’m sitting down to write. Every week, at the same time. And I am consistently producing content so I can stay top of mind of my prospects.
If I ignored this time slot, I would slip.
And I would appear flaky and inconsistent and eventually, untrustworthy.
It says a lot that you’re able to constantly be present online.
Tip: put your phone in another room to remove modern day distractions.
Even writing this email, I have my phone next to me and I’ve looked at it a few times. It’s distracted me.
Put it in another room or simply behind your laptop so it’s out of sight.
You’ll dial in so much more.
I appreciate this is hard for busy CEOs and founders out there. Because you have employees to manage.
But the impact this 1-2 hour writing slot will have on your business long term is huge.
Batch write your content to build leverage long term.
TL;DR:
I get why people say “be consistent” is rubbish advice.
Because most advice doesn’t show you how to or why it’s important. So I hope this helps you.
But batch writing consistently then scheduling it ahead of time will, long term, help you generate 3 to 5 leads every month from LinkedIn IF…you have the right strategy, you know your customers are there and you write the ‘right’ content.
